SUMMARY:Battle in the Margins Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Open to students\, emerging writers\, and professionals\, this writing workshop invites New Yorkers across all five boroughs to grapple with the American Revolution’s contradictions – a fight for liberty in a society where enslavement remained legal. Through thought-provoking prompts and community dialogue\, participants will explore themes of freedom\, displacement\, and identity in Revolutionary-era New York. \nBattle in the Margins is a new theatrical project collaboration between the New York Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation and Black Gotham Experience exploring Black life in New York City during the American Revolution. Developed through a series of original one-act\, ten-minute plays\, this project centers the African Diaspora’s experiences\, resistance\, and role in shaping early American history – shining a light on stories often left out of the nation’s founding narrative. DESCRIPTION:Now in its 19th year\, City of Water Day is a region-wide day\, organized by Waterfront Alliance and New York–New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP)\, to champion a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey harbor by inviting communities to experience their local waterways through free\, family friendly activities that support joy\, belonging\, education\, access\, and stewardship. \nFDR Four Freedoms State Park will be hosting the following activities and performances: \n1:00 pm ShakunDaviDance\nensemble dance performance \n3:00 pm Fogo Azul NYC\nNYC’s own women-led samba reggae drumline \n\niDig2Learn marine touch table\nImagination Playground\nWhale origami craft\nPop-up Library\nLawn games\n\nFREE. No registration required. This event is rain or shine \n\n \nShakunDaviDance will be performing Introspection 2026\, a continuation and reworking of last year’s performance. Introspection is about Luyster Creek\, a body of water hidden in Queens/Astoria\, and it is a part of a series of works called Dancing Underground Waterways\, which is about dancing hidden bodies of water in Queens and beyond. Luyster Creek is an area with water that can be accessed by residents but isn’t. Through the dance performance of Introspection\, ShakunDaviDance is bringing the site’s history and possible future to residents of Roosevelt Island. \n\n \nFogo Azul NYC is New York City’s homegrown all women/trans/non-binary Brazilian-American Drumline! Founded in 2016 and based in Queens\, we can be seen appearing at over 150 events per year ranging from birthday parties and weddings to fundraisers\, galas\, parades and marches. Fogo Azul NYC is a community group open to folks who believe music and rhythm is in every human—if you give them the means\, very loudly! Fogo Azul NYC is an age and ethnically diverse community of people who span the drummer spectrum from novice to professional. Always taking new members.
