Newsletter: Volume 1, Issue 7

With this architecture month in mind, we wanted to share two quotes with you that relate to architecture and two significant upcoming anniversaries: the ratification of the United Nations Charter, and the public opening of the Park. Both occurred on October 24th, seventy years ago and three years ago, respectively. And both, the United Nations Headquarters and Four Freedoms Park, raise important questions like: How can architecture embody a philosophy? How does an idea shape design?

Yesterday, thousands of New York City public school students returned to their classrooms for another year. In their honor (and for the student in all of us), this month, we will be focusing on education at the Park. We asked our education department, Nellie A.V. Chaban and Emily Davidson, to write this month's newsletter and to share their approach to teaching at the Park. July came in with a boom. Literally. FDR Four Freedoms Park and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation collaborated to host a viewing of the Fourth of July fireworks this past weekend.Over 1600 people joined us at Southpoint Park and Four Freedoms Park as we celebrated the 239th anniversary of American independence and and watched the display illuminate the night sky over the East River. The longest day of the year is Sunday, June 21st. That this day lands in June seems fitting, for June has been an incredibly busy (and long) month for us at the Park.
